Informal Kickstarter Update

I’m one-third of the way through the campaign to fund the publication of my next book, Rules For Dating My Daughter, and things have gone very well. I’m currently inching past 150% of my goal, and have no complaints.

I announced two “stretch goals”, which were to pay some extra $$ to produce a book with nicer paper and better cover stock, and also to include a new essay that I hadn’t yet mentally committed to writing. I’ve hit both of those milestones.

I’m not sure about further stretch goals… I’m on a deadline with this, so I can’t keep committing to making new essays (I already have at least three that are unfinished), and I don’t think I want to upgrade the book to hardcover.

Hardcovers are nice, and the book fetishist part of me would love to make one (as well as the part of me that longs to be a “serious” author, who has hardcovers published of his books). But, I am not sure that it’s right for this comic. I might change my mind on this one.

I flirted with more ambitious stretch goals - either funding a reprint of Freddie & Me, or even a verrry obscure early graphic novella that I drew called Hedonism, but I’m wary of getting pulled into new projects that require a lot of time and energy to pull off. Running a Kickstarter is distracting enough. I’ve got new comics I want to write.

At this point, I think I’d like to realign the message of the Kickstarter, to make it all about pre-ordering a copy of the Rules book. Ordering through the Kickstarter means that shipping is included for all domestic backers, so cost-wise, it’s the equivalent of finding the book in a store and just paying cover price.

If you’re like me, and live nowhere near a good comic store that’s likely to carry this book, this might be an excellent option for you.
