My first exposure to Terry Pratchett was Good Omens, which I think is one of the greatest books of all time. I have never laughed out loud at a book so much in my life. I mistakenly attributed the excellence of that book primarily to Neil Gaiman until some time later when I read my first Discworld novel and realized "OH! It was Terry Pratchett who brought the FUNNY!" I promptly re-read Good Omens just for the pleasure of giving credit where it was due. Overall, Good Omens remains my favorite thing Terry Pratchett ever produced because it has that little bit of Neil Gaiman to appeal to the part of me that's a bit darker and inherently (so very, very) serious... but I have such admiration for both of them for realizing what they could make together -- a smart, imaginative, serious, silly, funny, lovely, nearly perfect book. Condolences to all of us greedy bastards who wish we might have even more from him.
