I’m a big Dick head. I can’t say exactly what it is about Richard NIxon I find so fascinating but lately I find myself watching a lot of YouTube videos about the guy and wind up taking Oliver Stone’s Nixon out for a spin whenever it shows up on cable.
It’s not his politics—I’m sure if I was an adult during Nixon’s time I would’ve found him as infuriating as I did George W. Bush but now that he’s safely dead and entombed in history (Watergate was almost 50 years ago!) it’s easier to see him as a tragic figure. He was smart, ambitious, passionate but also paranoid, insecure and awkward.
I was excited to stumble across Nixon’s the One, a very strange series in which Harry Shearer reenacts the recordings Nixon made while in the White House. The make-up is horrible and distracting but in sharp contrast Shearer underplays it nicely.
