Tying Up Tearing
The Survival Series is over.
The last book has been out for months now and I'm still having a hard time with that fact. I didn't plan on writing that series. I planned to finish the Quarantined Series, finish the Bird of Stone series, and see where my imagination took me from there. But Joss jumped out at me and she wouldn't go away and I miss her now that she's gone.
Some of you have told me you miss her as well (and Trent and Ryan and Cren and the list goes on, the biggest compliment an author can receive!). While the end of the series made the majority of you happy, I know I left some unanswered questions. I left a bit to the imagination of the reader, but I want you guys to know I tried to write an epilogue. I agonized over it for a month! I wrote it, trashed it, rewrote it, glared at it, cursed at it, and in the end I abandoned it. It wasn't meant to be written. End of story - literally.
But there's no harm in telling you how I saw it all panning out, right? :)
Here are the answers to some really great questions I just received. If you wanted more of a resolution from the end of the series, here it is in the best form I can give it to you:
Did Ryan and Joss work out?YES! Survival Series is about living v. surviving, friendship, the apocalypse, growing up, zombies - but at the heart of it is a love story and that story ends happily. In my attempt at an epilogue I saw Joss and Ryan living together in a small house in the woods arguing about root vegetables and the color of kale. Ryan took over Crenshaw's gardens, Joss hunted regularly with Trent, and the Market became much more open. The freed Colonists attended, all of the Lost Boys from every gang, and even the Vashons crossed the bay to trade with everyone.
Trent and Amber - what came of the kiss? A baby.
Yeah, in the epilogue Trent was in a loving relationship with a very patient woman and was about to become a father. He was, as always, very chill about it. Joss was freaking out. She was scared to hug Amber, convinced she'd crush the baby inside her.
Does Vin get to lead the Pod? Come on, guys. It's Vin. Hell yes he got his Pod :) He and Joss' friendship didn't miss a beat despite their fight. She's like a sister to him. He'd forgive her anything and (though she'd never admit it) she'd never give up on him either. Vin took control of the Northern Pod, adding half the Hive to his ranks. In fact, Amber and Trent lived in his Pod while Amber was pregnant because it was safer up there inside his walls. They had an invitation to Vashon Island for the duration, but Trent declined. He refused to say why.
What happened to Crenshaw's daughter?I don't know why, but I love this question. It digs deeper into the story, leaving no stone unturned, and something about that makes me so happy. Crenshaw's daughter was at The Hive all along. She wasn't being held against her will. She'd attached herself to one of the drug dealers in the gang, gotten hooked on the stuff, and was "happily" living there in a drug fueled haze. She couldn't cope with the apocalypse so she hid from it inside The Hive and the drugs. Joss and Ryan made the effort to find her, told her Cren was dead, and she immediately asked if he had anything of value that was hers now. They walked away, glad Cren had never known what became of his daughter.
And that's it! I hope that tied up some loose threads anyone may have had. If you guys ever have questions about the stories, ASK THEM! I love them. I will answer anything. Thanks for reading, loving, and investing in the Survival Series. I look forward to writing Trent's origins novella next year. It's Trent so you know it's gonna get weird :)
