Kerry Adrienne – Cruise Control
Parker paused. His guest seemed so put together. So in charge. Was it possible he really did understand?
Blake sighed. “Where were you stationed?”
“Robins.” Parker noodled out a melody on the keys, the out-of-tune piano almost groaning at being used.
“Really?” Blake stretched. “Not far from here. What, maybe fifty miles?”
“Less. Depending on how you get there.”
Blake rubbed his face. “Damn. I was sent halfway around the world to a shithole in the Middle East.”
Parker stopped playing. Military? No way. Not spoiled-rich brat, Blake. He paused. Now that he thought about it, his guest did have a military-ness to him. Something in his cocky carriage, maybe. Something in his firm voice hinted at command. “Air Force?”
Blake shook his head. “Army. But the chapter is closed and I don’t get into it. No offense, man, it’s the way I am. My past is the past. Maybe I shouldn’t have pried into yours.”
He hadn’t seen Blake so solemn, not even when his precious car was DOA at the garage. “Fair enough,” he whispered.
Blake looked into his eyes with a seriousness that sent Parker’s pulse racing. He took a sharp breath as Blake’s gaze explored his.
“You understand.”
It wasn’t a question. Parker nodded, positive Blake could hear his heart thundering yes, I do with every beat. He understood all right. He loved his country, loved serving and protecting, but the time was long past. Truly another lifetime someone else had lived. It was time to move on.
Blake touched him under the chin with one finger and slid along his jawline with a soft drag. Parker didn’t move, sure if he did, his legs would give out. As Blake met resistance from Parker’s day-old shave, his touch lightened, sending chills up Parker’s back.
Blake leaned in until his breath warmed Parker’s cheek and the smell of his cologne permeated every bit of air. “We’d better get to bed since we have to leave so early.”
Bed. Parker nodded again, aware he’d been reduced to head gestures, as all language had fled. If he turned, his lips would find Blake’s.
Blake paused and neither man moved. Parker opened his eyes and Blake tugged a finger over his bottom lip then dropped his hand. Parker flinched at the loss of Blake’s touch. What had just happened?
“Where’s the toilet? I gotta piss.”
