Hawaii with a gag ball

As I prepare to travel to Hawaii this weekend with my wonderful man, D.J. Manly and my niece and goddaughter, Eleanna, I am mindful of the fact that at the age of 14 I am lucky she still wants to gang out with me. She also, of course, adores D.J. We have grand plans and she is a wonderful girl. I can't wait to be on my way to Honolulu with her.

She is the daughter of my very best friends, my cousin Chris, and his husband, Tracy. They are wonderful parents and they trust us completely but ever since the countdown began, Tracy has driven me crazy with last minute panic attacks.

"A.J., if it rains in Honolulu (which it does, every five minutes) perhaps you should consider taking the tiki trolley instead of driving."

Another text, "A.J., bring over your cell phone. I want to have Lojack installed on it."

It goes on and on. Yesterday, I called his husband who has been busy stocking up on sex toys and champagne for their kid-free week. I asked him if the treasure trove included a gag ball.

"A.J.," he said, "Try living with the guy. He woke me up at 4am to ask if we couldn't have her microchipped."

I know they trust me, and anyone who knows me knows that I would never let anyone near her. Her very first teenage crush was traumatized by a family barbecue with me, Chris and Tracy, but still…I had a sudden flashback to an experience I'd long forgotten. I was four years old and growing up in Bondi Beach, Australia. My mum took me and my brother Alex shopping. I apparently had ants in my pants because I ran in and out of stores like a demented flea. She bought a harness and put it on me.

A harness!

I actually have a memory of that thing. I remember straining against it. I do remember also, being very embarrassed.

In total frustration and as a joke I sent the picture below to Tracy. I texted, maybe I should buy her one of these?

He wrote back, What sizes do they come in?

I'm not sure he was joking. I do know, however, my little contribution to their weeklong fun will be an industrial strength gag ball.

How about all my friends and readers who have kids…would you trust a good friend with your precious cargo? Leave a comment and the best one wins a free ebook from me!

Aloha oe,

A.J.

Shell ROFL!!! I would be the same way, the poor man. Tell him it'll be ok. Would I trust a good friend with my precious cargo? Hmm, does my twin brother count as a good friend? If so, then yes. :)

Enjoy your vacation, AJ!

A.J. Llewellyn Thanks for the vote of confidence, Michelle!

message 3: by Leaundra (new)

Leaundra I can understand how he's feeling A.J. To me it would depend on who it was. Don't feel bad there are some people that won't let their own spouses keep their own children, LOL I think not having their children there make some people feel out of control. I think you will do great though:-) I hope you all have a fun and safe trip!

message 4: by Trisha (new)

Trisha Im afraid I would be the same way..and it would not have anything to do with not trusting you! Just agree with Chris then go about your buisness and have a wonderful vacation! I'm sure Eleanna is looking forward to this trip. Be safe!

Ter LOL!!! That is so funny, I love the part about the "microchip" my husband said the same thing for when our daughter gets her drivers license! (she's only 9 now)
I'm sure they trust you but it's probably the distance in the trip.
Would I trust you or said friends Yes, but I would be nervous and a little scared cause of the distance.
Is this her first long distance trip? If so all I can say is be prepared for many calls and/or texts when you all get there. You should make up a Quick text that says "she's fine, call ya later"
Good luck and have a wonderful trip, he'll calm down once you get there.

Lily LOL No matter how much you trust the other person a parent will **always** worry. It's ingrained.

Hope you guys have a great time in Hawaii. :)

Fantastic post, AJ! Last year I allowed my sisters to take my 9 yr old to New York City. Now, that city scares the crap out of me, so you can imagine my anxiety level. Still, I let Delaney go and she absolutely fell in love with everything the city had to offer. I'm glad I got over my own issues and allowed her to stretch her wings. I think it's important to show children there is more to the world than the small space they're living in.

LMAO! Leaundra, sweets, there is no way in hell I would leave my daughter and my husband alone together for an entire week. Last time I left them for a day and came back to a table full of empty hot chocolate cups, a daughter who was wearing the same thing I left her in, minus the pants and who jumped up off the couch when I came in and morphed into a ninja fighting girl. Furthermore my living room had been rearranged into some sort of weird movie watching/game playing fun room that included our dining room chairs and a fort. My house would be destroyed and I'm just not ready for that. Maybe when they both mature a little. LOL!

LOL omg Michelle, I can see why you wouldn't but I bet your daughter had so much fun. Awww your husband is a big kid. I remember doing all of that when I was young, LOL. Yeah you better wait until they're both a little more mature, hehe

@AJ, I really must live in my own little hidey hole, didn't know you and DJ were together. Very cool. I hope you all enjoy the trip!

Yay Leaundra! Enjoy your book! :)

M'rella This is so funny! I know first hand how protective one could get over a teenage girl. Sometimes I wish not only for a harness, but a tazer as well: Boyfriends, stay away! ...just kidding! ;)
Anyway, have you ever heard of "10 rules of dating my daughter"? Very funny, though a little crude. My husband had actually printed them out to give away to potential suitors. Needless to say more than one boy turned a little pale after reading them :)
