Chapter 194: One Thing Remains
“The terrain changes the threat,” Taweel explained. “When I was here, the Fallen used to ooze up out of the river, whispering nightmares and stealing hope. Much different than those valleys, where every crevice and gulley is enough t– ”
Tamaes halted the lecture by driving both fists into his mentor’s breastplate. “Stop!”
Taweel grunted in surprise.
“You are rambling.” The boy’s eyes flashed. “You do not ramble.”
Silence echoed in the silted plain abandoned by everything—even the river.
Finally, Taweel said, “There is nothing left.”
“Teach me this,” Tamaes demanded. “Teach me how to love my charge forever.”
