“Understanding What’s Beneath the Surface.”
Sliding Beneath the Surface for young adults and adults young at heart. Paranromal & Historical. The St. Augustine Trilogy: Book I
A review placed on Amazon by jelliajam.
“Doug Dillon’s Sliding Beneath the Surface was an intriguing read.
“I’ve always thought that the rich history of St. Augustine would provide a fascinating opportunity for a historical novel, but I didn’t expect a story that would play out so successfully in both the present and the past.
“Teens (and adults, as well) will readily relate to young Jeff Golden’s struggles with anger, a troubled homelife, a new relationship, and unexplainable inner turmoil. “And the other characters–his friend, Carla, and her friend, Lobo–are entertaining and engaging, as well.
“You learn a lot about Florida history, too, without even trying, and there’s plenty of twists and turns to keep you reading (the way he ends each chapter makes it absolutely impossible to not immediately begin the next one).
“However, the most interesting aspect of the novel is that it tackles the concept that there is more to our existence than meets the eye, and that we are bound to our past more than we’d like to think.
“It also explores telekinesis, which is always a hot topic.
“. . . the second half is riveting and leaves you seriously considering the surface of existence and wondering just how our world is put together.
“I also enjoyed the part where Jeff and Carla go back to “the past”.
“The ways in which the characters from 1835 related to two young people who clearly came from another place, seemed very realistic
“This would be a good novel for students because it entertains, teaches and provokes serious reflection about our “reality.”
