The Balance Chapter 3 Posted on line

I’ve posted a fourth chapter of THE BALANCE on my web site.

The Balance is a Young Adult book set in the future.

The survivors of a global thermonuclear war rebuilt a life in a place called The Land. The recovery was made possible through the actions of two groups. One group was The Council of God, intent on avoiding the mistakes of the past by engendering a simpler agricultural lifestyle and by maintaining faith. The second group, called The Order, was a technology organization, intent on saving what it could of the advances mankind had made, creating living time capsules for the future.

For over one hundred years the two groups managed to work together in an uncomfortable alliance. The Balance was maintained until the three Engineered Human Programs were revealed. The result was a witch hunt that drove The Order out of power and into hiding, and hunted down to kill what the Council called ”demons” —the products of the genetics programs.

Phoebe, a seventeen year old girl, was overlooked during the purge and was the last creation of genetic Sensitives program. She tries to hide her gifts while living and hiding in the Theocracy that emerged after The Purge. Most technology has been banned, being caught with a forbidden object can land you in prison, or worse. Phoebe wants to overcome the curse she was born with, and which threatens her sanity, to live a normal life.

The survivors of the Order were driven underground. Its members are seeking a way to re-establish The Balance of power, and to change  the anti-technology regime that emerged after the Purge. They see Phoebe as key to achieving their goals, but aren’t sure they can keep her alive and don’t know if she’ll cooperate.

Thanks April. I'm slogging my way through what is my 23rd revision now—it will be the final version. It's likely to take me to the end of the year to complete the entire process. I'm bouncing chapters off of an editor from Little, Brown as I go. He seems to like the book and the writing since I've changed its tone and perspective, but there are around 51 chapters, so it takes time.

After revision, I'll probably polish once or twice and then I'll go to copy edit, which will probably take a month since I expect the final version will be on the order of 120K words or so - about 500 pages, maybe more.

Then I'll go through design and finally publishing. I've already designed the new cover image and my friend in Italy is drawing samples for me to look at.

I think this will be a really good book, but I doubt it will be out before December and maybe not till the first of January. In the mean time, I'll keep posting a chapter per month. This lets people know what's coming and gives them a chance to sample another aspect of my writing style—I like to vary what I write, including genre. I've got the draft of the book after that one half written and I've plotted and written some of the one after that, and so forth.

Let me know, when we get close to publishing (I'll put posts in the blogs as we get closer. There's a lot of work to do to put a book out that meets my quality standards—although every book still has errors in it, even The Boy Who Ran. I just haven't decided to fix them yet.

Michael Selden Thanks April. I stopped by the post office on the way to Walmart—I've been building a greenhouse—the person there said you should get it Thursday.

April Epley Awesome thank you. Good luck with your greenhouse! I plan on doing that one day. :)
