Interview with A.S. Fenichel
Thank you so much for inviting me to visit today. I’m really happy to be here.
Tell us about your publishing journey…
I’ve been a story teller all my life. I’m the kid who always stared out the window in school and daydreamed the day away. I never wrote any stories down though. It never even occurred to me that I should or could do such a thing. When I was a freshman in college my English comp professor assigned a short story. That was my “ah ha” moment.
So I wrote and wrote for years after that. Once I thought I was ready, I started submitting. I was not ready. I received dozens of rejection letters. I think this is the point when a lot of writers and artists give up, but it only made me more determined to become a better writer.
I gave up my day job in June of 2009 to follow my husband to Texas and pursue writing full time. In April of 2011 I got the “call” and accepted my first contract to publish Mayan Afterglow.
What do you love about being an author?
What’s not to love? I get up every day and make up stuff and live inside my imagination. It’s my dream come true. Plus I write romance so there will always be a happily ever after no matter what is happening in the world.
If you could have dinner with any author, who would it be and what would you eat?
I think it would be really cool to have high tea with Jane Austin. Cucumber sandwiches and tea in the parlor would be awesome.
If your book was to be made into a movie, who would you cast as the leads?
For Kane’s Bounty I would cast Michael Fassbender as Kane and Jessica Alba as Lena. Then for Joshua’s Mistake, due out this spring, I would cast Gerard Butler as Joshua (Kane’s Brother) and Charlize Theron as Tessa.
This is fun! Quite the dream team I’ve chosen.
Vampires – do you prefer them as sexy leads or blood hungry monsters?
I guess I like the monsters to be monsters so I lean toward “blood hungry”. However, vampires lend themselves to working well as sexy leads. Better than say; the demons with rotting skin that I wrote about in the Mayan Destiny series.
If you had a time machine, which era would you go back to and why?
Tough question! I love the Regency era with all the elegance and rules, but it was not really a good time to be a woman unless you managed to marry well. I think it would have been interesting to live in NYC in the late nineteenth century. That time and place had a certain ceremony and elegance. There was excitement left by the Industrial Revolution and vast immigration. It was when my great grandparents first made their way to the United States. Women’s roles were just starting to change for the better.
What life advice do you wish you’d been given sooner?
I guess I worried more than I should have. If someone had told me earlier that there would be ups and downs, but it would all be alright if I stuck to my beliefs. It would have saved me a few gray hairs in the long run.
If you were a supernatural creature, what would you be and why?
It would be cool to be a dragon, fire breathing with wings. Does this really need explanation? Come on, that’d be really cool.
Where do you write best?
I have a chaise lounge in our sunroom, overlooking the lake. I usually write there and edit in the office. Creativity vs. necessary evil. ;)
What was the last book you read, and what were your thoughts on it?
The Rogue’s Proposal by Jennifer Haymore. It is a beautiful, funny historical and I enjoyed every page.
If you didn’t write in your genre, which other would you prefer and why?
I’m currently published in erotic paranormal romance, historical romance and erotic contemporary romance. I just signed a contract for a series of historical paranormal romance. I can’t imagine I could squeeze another genre or subgenre in. Buuuut…. maybe a good ghost story one day.
Where can fans find you online?
I can be found in most social media outlets. Here are some links.
