Under Our Skin: Memorial Tattoos

Sound Waves of a Mother’s Last Voicemail to her Son

While Tumblr has tons of memorial ink, an upcoming column for ModernLoss.com will feature tribute pieces that are outside the usual tropes.

A rose and a banner of a cousin’s name is certainly meaningful, but has anyone mixed their late cousin’s ashes with tattoo ink for a reproduction of her handwriting? Or inked the heartbeat tracing from a late friend’s heart monitor? If you’ve got a tattoo of Nana’s handmade lace—though maybe not Nana’s face or the phrase “In Loving Memory of”—you have the kind of unobvious memorial tattoo we’re looking for.

To be considered, send 125 words or less explaining the tattoo’s significance plus a med-res photo of it to splittingthedifference@gmail.com. Or hashtag #modernlosstattoo on Tumblr and include an explanatory caption. Submission deadline is Feb. 1, 2014.
