So despite some initial scepticism about the provenance I've confirmed that today's +
Snapchat data breach,
http://goo.gl/lm1VR0, of 4.6 million records—just over half the Snapchat user base—is legitimate.
A quick trawl through the list has got multiple hits amongst my own friends group, including some I didn't know were on Snapchat—sorry guys. Anyway...
I'm now taking an initial look at the data, and interestingly there doesn't seem to be any international numbers in the leaked database, they're all US numbers with the bulk of the user names are from the greater New York and greater San Francisco areas—as you might expect.
My assumption is that whomever compiled the database was using the find_friends exploit recently published by
#GibsonSecurity,
http://goo.gl/iJOMdp, and didn't want to be bothered with non-US numbers. But you never know, there might be something else to it.
More soon…
