My Newest Obsession

My newest obsession-- The Paradise from BBC. Admittedly many of my obsessions come from BBC-- like North and South and the Toby Stephens version of Jane Eyre and Under the Greenwood Tree. In fact I become easily obsessed with any movie or book set in 19th century Europe-- hence my newest obsession -- The Paradise. Sadly, over here in America, we can’t see season 2 yet and I’m dying to watch it. And so I’m asking my friends across the pond-- how was season 2? Was it as awesome as season 1? Is Moray still “utterly adorable”?

Bookphenomena (Micky) Season 2 just finished a few weeks ago, it was fab but lots of ups and downs along the way.....don't want to give too much away. Catherine remains quite poisonous as does another new evil figure (evil laugh). I don't think there will be another series :-(

I can't wait but I think it won't be here until late next year. I bought season 1 on DVD and have watched it a ridiculous amount of times. I was wondering if it would continue on afterward. I was hoping it would be ongoing. I don't know why they make us wait so long for it over here. I've read that Dudley is going to play Jem in a remake of Jamaica Inn which sounds awesome except it won't be in the UK until 2014 so it will be even longer until we get it in the U.S. The BBC likes to torture me.

Bookphenomena (Micky) Ooh, not heard about Jamaica Inn, love Daphne du Maurier so that's bound to be good. Dudley is one of those supporting characters/actors that was excellent. Here in the UK there's a new BBC one off called 'death at Pemberley' set five years after Darcy and Elizabeth's marriage. On tomorrow, so looking forward to that! Sure that will come to the US. Enjoy Paradise season 2 when it gets there!

Death at Pemberley? So now there's another one I have to wait for. Ugh. Daphne du Maurier is one of my favorites. I wish they'd remake Rebecca. It's never been done well. Aside from one copy of The Last of the Mohicans (because of Daniel Day Lewis, of course) my entire DVD shelf is filled with BBC movies-- no joking. I even have two copies of North and South in case some unexpected tragedy befalls the first copy.

Bookphenomena (Micky) Clearly we are very similar in our tastes! I have to say though the ITV version of 'persuasion' with Rupert Penry-jones was also a favourite. On the North and South front...'look back, look back at me.....' My favourite scene alongside the train meeting at the end! Hope you get chance to watch some of your collection during Christmas! :-)

Oh my gosh we are like clones. I have watched the Rupert Penry-jones version about fifty times. I love the scene where he picks her up and plops her on the back of the carriage. I loved that scene in the book too because it showed that he was concerned about her but he did it in such a comical way. And yes of course the "look back, look back at me was one of the best scenes and the end is one of the best on screen kisses ever. I keep thinking that Armitage would have made a great Rochester. He's so handsome he even looks good as a troll. I've already watched all of season 1 of The Paradise so I think I'll watch North and South next and give Moray a short break. I do think that Paradise is almost as flawless as North and South. Does it have a big following in the UK?

Bookphenomena (Micky) I agree Richard Armitage would have made a good Rochester. It's funny The Paradise doesn't seem to have been as popular as many other period dramas. Have you read Emile Zola's book. I haven't yet but intend to, it's set in Paris and quite different to the series I believe. I also say a trailer on TV for a new period drama coming soon and 'Denise' was cast in it, don't know the name of it. Did you see wives and daughters BBC and the buccaneers ITV from about 15 years ago?

I haven't read the book either. I wonder why it didn't really catch on. I really got into it immediately, which I must admit I never did with Downton Abbey. I own wives and daughters but that's one of my least watched DVDs. I prefer Middlemarch. I have the latest version of Mansfield Park but I can't think of the actor's name. I think the one actor who plays Fanny's brother is huge now in a vampire show on TV. I've heard of the Buccaneers but I don't know if I've ever seen it. I'll have to check it out. One of my personal favorites is Under the Greenwood Tree with Keely Hawes (I think that's how you spell it)Although I don't think that one was ever super popular. Oh and of course there's the Colin Firth version of P and P which is unmatched.

Bookphenomena (Micky) Ok, just watched first installment of Death comes to pemberley....it was so good! Interesting to see Elizabeth and Darcy together and their married interactions were true to Austen. A new side dark and light side to wickham....you have to see this. I also liked Bleak House and Little dorrit both BBC. I agree there will be no version to surpass the Colin firth one....because he did it so well.

Tess Oliver I see Matthew Goode is in the background. By the military coat I can only assume he is Wickham. I loved him in Leap Year. I hope this comes to the states. It has to be shown by PBS (our public broadcasting channel) or it won't be seen here. We miss a lot of good stuff, unfortunately. I have Little Dorrit but I confess I usually end up fast forwarding to the parts with Matthew Macfadyen. (I think that's how it is spelled. Funny I couldn't spell his girlfriend's name either-- or are they married?) Bleak House is one I haven't seen yet.

♥ Rebecca ♥ Thanks guys for this awesome convo! :P You guys gave me several more movies/mini-series/TV shows to add to my long Period Romance list. Including The Paradise, of course.

Micky, you enjoyed the Buccaneers? After I watched it I made this video. It was one of the most romantic scenes I had even seen and I just had to make a vid for it. :P Not the best video ever, but I dabble with Sony Vegas.
