Creating Characters

11_5I’ve been giving a lot of thought lately to what it takes to create characters. How do we writers manufacture the illusion of living human beings through words on the page? And I use that word, illusion, advisedly. It’s vital to remember that what we are doing when we write fiction is creating illusion, all of it, from the stories we make up—even if bits are borrowed from life—to the people who populate them. It’s not life; it’s an imitation of life.

I’m caught in this internal monologue right...

Taylor Ferguson-Wade I've been thinking about writing lately. I am writing a new book, called Warrior Cats- The Journey. I am super excited! I actually just posted it online! Have you ever thought about using www.wattpad.com to write stories then post them online? I am thinking about becoming a writer someday, because of you and my other favorite writers! I loved your book about the cat by the way! I can't think of the name but I was lovely. Hope you get the chance to read this, and don't just over look me as one of those people that are too full of themselves. My perspective is, If we don't have some one that is to full of them self, we as humans, will never feel pride in ourselves. Well, I truly and sincerely hope you get the chance to read this and reply. Thanks
Sincerely,

Marion Dane Bauer Hi, Taylor,

So nice to hear from you. I don't think at all that you're "too full of yourself." And I agree that feeling pride in ourselves and respecting ourselves is important. I wonder if the cat book you are thinking about is called Ghost Eye. Might that be it?

I don.t write stories to post online, but I think it's a good way to start out.

Thanks for writing to me.

Taylor Ferguson-Wade Hi!! I haven't been on Goodreads for so long (because of school) and was ecstatic to see you replied!!!!! The book was called a Question of Trust, and I appreciate the kind words. Now (that I'm a little older) I am embarrassed by my choice of words last time, but I guess we say silly things when we are younger. Thank you again,
