The Good Shepherd Province of East Asia includes Myanmar

Good Shepherd Sisters have seven communities in Myanmar: Hopin, Loikaw, Mandalay, Thayarwadi Township, Latha Township, Yangon Village, and the novitiate in Yangon.
GS has been in Myanmar since 1990 and has Burmese sisters.
Since Cyclone Nargis hit we have heard that though there was property damage at the convent in Myanmar, no person was injured. One sisters writes: “In our own convent in Yangon there is a considerable amount of damage to all the five buildings. Many trees are gone. Thank God there was no injury to any person living in our own premises. All the trees in the whole area fell. They were huge trees and almost all the roads are blocked by these trees. Many poor people are affected. Without help it will be very difficult for them to get back to normal life again.”
Let us be in solidarity in prayers
with the people of Myanmar.
Blessings...

Sr. Ramani Silva, provincial leader of East Asia, wrote in an email to Sr. Brigid Lawlor, congregational leader, that though there were damages in properties in the convent in Myanmar, no person was injured. The Province of East Asia covers Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand.
Thousands of lives perished in a devastating storm that hit Myanmar on May 3. Immediately after the news broke that cyclone Nargis ravaged the country, sisters led by Sr. Brigid, and friends offered prayers and support.
Sr. Ramani, who is in Bangkok, Thailand for the Provincial Chapter scheduled May 6– 15, said all the sisters including delegates from Myanmar arrived safely in time for the Chapter. She said they were able to get some information about the situation in Myanmar. “In our own convent in Yangon there is a considerable amount of damage to all the five buildings. Many trees are gone. Thank God there was no injury to any person living in our own premises. All the trees in the whole area fell. They were huge trees and almost all the roads are blocked by these trees. Many poor people are affected. Without help it will be very difficult for them to get back to normal life again.”
It will be recalled that the Province of East Asia (Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam and South Korea) and China District (Hongkong, Macau, Taiwan) went through a process of restructuring. After meetings and reflection, the new province of Northeast Asia was established last year. It is composed of South Korea, Hongkong, Macau and Taiwan.

Reports said that more than 50,000 people were dead . If true, this makes Nargis as the world's deadliest storm since a 1999 cyclone in India killed 10,000 people.
Sr. Brigid assures the province of love, prayers and support. She encourages those who are able to help to do so.
