Fahrenheit 145- A short review
Ray Bradbury’s masterpiece is certainly a compelling read. T[image error]he story is simple. It is about an American society in the future that burns books and whosoever is in possession of books will be in great trouble. The protagonist Guy Montag is a fireman who burns all the books, but he meets a girl who is peculiar because she notices things like the growing of grass and the moon, while others sit in their homes watching TV from dawn to dusk or listen to a radio station. Montag with curiosity and with perpetual unhappiness he decides to steal a book. And from then on he is on constant run, as the other officer Beatty comes to his house to burn his house and to arrest him. He gets help from Professor Faber, but in the end a mechanical dog is set to track him, but he somehow crosses the river and meets some outlaws(these are professor’s by the way) who have memorized many books. But sadly there is a war and the town is destroyed. It is a dystopian novel. Enjoyed the book anyway.
Themes(Wikipedia)
There are two major themes of this novel: resistance to conformity and control of individuals via technology and mass media. Bradbury explores how the government is able to use mass media to influence society and suppress individualism through book burning. In addition, the characters Beatty and Faber point out the American population is also to blame. Due to their constant desire for a simplistic, positive image, books must be suppressed. Beatty blames the minority groups, who would take offense to published works that displayed them in an unfavorable light. Faber, went further to state that the American population simply stopped reading on their own. He notes that the book burnings themselves became a form of entertainment to the general public.
