Sneak Peek Sunday
Sneak Peek Sunday consists of 6 paragraphs, WIP or published, from a list of authors.
My sneak peek today is from a WIP called, Coming Home. It’s not edited at all and is new. I’m about 2 chapters in and am still fleshing out my characters and plot. But this is what I may work on during Camp NaNo.
Enjoy.
Also, my first book releases this Tuesday, July 2nd. WOOT!! It’s a novella in an anthology of beach reads with two other wonderful authors, RE Hargrave and MB Feeney. In My Mother’s Footsteps by Forbes Arnone, check it out.
Driving up the dusty graveled drive to the ranch his family owned–his home–seemed surreal. Francisco Javier Zamorano’s tires kicked up dust and he heard the pinging from the rocks hitting the undercarriage of his truck. He had come home just once during his six year stint in the Army on his very first leave after bootcamp, but had not been back since. Francisco Javier’s first tour in Afghanistan left him more of a solitary man instead of the outgoing, sociable kid he used to be.
Lowering his window to punch in the gate code, he waited for the metal doors to open and spotted a new addition to the family. There amongst the horses, in the vast green pasture, stood a small black donkey with the most beautiful white markings on her face. The ranch’s eldest Tennessee Walker, Molly, seemed to have taken a liking to her since they were joined at the hip. Looking closer for his horse, the one his dad gave him when he turned sixteen, proved to be difficult.
Once the path was cleared, Francisco Javier drove the rest of the way up to the house. That was when he spotted Nugget, the beautiful sand colored horse stood by the fence closest to the house almost as if he knew Francisco Javier had arrived. Jumping out of the truck, he ran to him, and Nugget stretched his neck out for a caress. The breath blown toward Nugget’s nose for recognition was a waste because he knew exactly who Francisco Javier was.
“Hey, buddy. Did you miss me?” Francisco Javier asked him while stroking the space between his eyes and down his nose with the palm of his hand. Nugget snorted in reply. “I missed you, too.”
“Javi? Is that you?” The sound of his mother’s voice made his chest hurt. He had missed her so much. Turning around to face the house, he saw her running toward him. She looked almost exactly the same as she did when he saw her last. Her black hair was braided down her back and he watched it sway side to side as she ran. Her face was a bit more weathered, but that was to be expected from spending most of your time outside in those high altitude mountains. She had on a pair of worn blue jeans and a t-shirt with her favorite black cowboy boots. He couldn’t believe she still had those things.
Francisco Javier took three long strides toward her and wrapped his arms around her waist and swung her around. Her arms went around his neck and she sobbed on his shoulder. Tears stung his eyes when he felt her tremble in his embrace.
