The final tale of Until I Break

Over the last 2 1/2 years, I've learned that it's nearly impossible to explain to others what it's like to be a writer, so I expect what I'm about to attempt to be even more difficult.

People write for different reasons and, from the very beginning, I've told y'all that I write for you, that it's more than just a paycheck.  Well, I'm about to prove that what I've said is true.

When I wrote Until I Break, I could've watered down the story, made it more palatable, easier to accept.  But as an artist, I didn't want to cheat Sam and Alec out of their story.  As I've said before, life isn't always pretty, but I had hoped that the majority of people would be able to see beyond the ugly to the wonderful story of love and acceptance and healing that was embedded in Until I Break.  Sadly, that hasn't turned out to be the case.

So, rather than risking people misunderstanding Sam and Alec and, therefore, me as a person and author, I'm pulling the book from publication. It will no longer be available in any format from any source after tomorrow.  Yes, I could leave it out there to earn money, but every cent would be bitter, knowing that there are some who not only don't "get" the story, but who are misunderstanding it in a disheartening way.

I would like to say a big ol' THANK YOU to everyone who read, loved and understood the twisted lives and beautiful love of Sam and Alec.  You gave me so much happiness with your outpouring of amazingly supportive words.  I'm truly, truly grateful.

I'll always have Sam and Alec, and I learned more from them as characters and from their story than I ever thought possible.  I've also learned a lot about people and friends and authors, and the world as a whole during this particular journey.

So what now?  Well, I am moving on to my next project.  And I hope to bring you better and better and better stories with each one I write and publish.  Maybe one day (I sincerely HOPE) the world will be ready for Sam and Alec.  Until then, I've got more fabulous characters and compelling stories to tell you.  I hope you'll hang around and listen:)

With much love,

Michelle

p.s.  For those who have bought a copy, no need to worry that it will disappear.  It will remain on your reading device as is:)

p.s.s.  I'd also like to mention that I could change parts of the story to make it more palatable to a larger group of people, but I won't.  I'd rather pull it and be true to Alec and Sam than betray them by softening their story.  I know that many of you understand and that means more to me than you'll ever know.

p.s.s.s.  As the day wears on and I get feedback on my decision, I'd just like to remind you all how very hard this decision was for me.  If you look at this from my perspective, from a financial as well as an artistic one, maybe, just maybe you might see that pulling the book and facing the backlash takes courage, too.

Amanda (mandy) I haven't had a chance to read it, but I did purchase it. I'm looking forward to it. You haven't disappointed me yet in anything I've read. It was a brave decision and I'm sorry you felt this was necessary

message 2: by Terri (N.J.) (new)

Terri (N.J.) I purchased this book yesterday and now I'm like half way. So glad I did. Would hate to have had to miss out on such wonderful writting and storytelling!

message 3: by Karen (new)

Karen I hope she reconsiders. I am about half way through and it's a really good story. I just don't understand why people would have an issue with it. Just don't read it if it's not for you. There are quite a few books that I've started and just couldn't get into the story. Such a shame!

message 4: by Terri (N.J.) (new)

Terri (N.J.) I agree Karen. For the life of me I can't understand why some people make a big stink about the content of a book when they don't agree with it. They were not forced to read it. It's a simple pick and choose. If you end up not liking a book you pick then oh well, move on. Simply say that wasn't for me. Never judge what others may like in a story. For goodness sakes it's fiction.

message 5: by Karen (new)

Karen Thanks Terri. There are so many judgmental people out there. They really need to chill out. Life it too short to get worked up about a story. Move on to something else!

Ginger Huffstetler I don't think anyone should keep you from writing what you want to. I didn't enjoy this book as much as the other books you've written but I did like it. That only means I gave 4 stars instead of your usual 5 stars in your great books...and only because 5 is as high as it goes! Please don't let the narrow minded make you do something you don't want to do. Those who are upset shouldn't be a reason for you to pull your book. Those of us who enjoy your books will keep buying them. You give us great stories! Oh...and please do a follow up book about her sister Chris!

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Omg this book was amazing!!!!!! I loved every bit of it and I'm honestly SO confused how anyone would of given negative feedback!? I'm just so glad I bought it in time. You are an amazing writer and I hate you felt like you had to do this. I know it must of been a heartbreaking decision...

message 8: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Until I Break has been on my wish list, but when I saw your post to remove it from publication, I immediately went and purchased it. I am sure I will love it as I love all of your stories. You are an amazing, creative and imaginative author who has so much to offer us. Those who love your stories will continue to support you. Those who are disturbed by them have the option of not buying those books or not finishing to ones they have bought. Thank you for sharing your imagination with us. Chin up. Tomorrow is another day...another beginning.

message 25: by France (last edited May 20, 2013 09:22AM) (new)

France This is a very sad news for me. I just saw this today and I wondering yesterday why I can't purchase Until I Break. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get my copy before it was pulled out. =( However, I understand and respect your decision. Hoping someday, people would be able to grasp and understand your artistic concept. Pulling it out would feel like letting go of your child. In so much ways, this book is your child, your baby whom you took care for so long time. It would sadden me that that I won't be able to meet your "baby" but I fully understand your reasons. Keep on writing girl. You're great in what you do. You give us joy and happiness with your works. Someday, maybe I could meet your "baby".

message 26: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Riley When u try to send u a messege it says u are not excepting messeges at this time; (

message 28: by Amy (new)

Amy Barber The book is lendable, so you can always try to find someone to lend it. It was a great story and I have absolutely NO IDEA what these people are complaining about. Yes, you need a bit of an open mind to understand these damaged people, but not accept bad behavior, it was about them getting past the bad stuff. I just don't get it.

Vivi Beyond disappointed that as a reader my choice to read a book (such a simple choice) was taken from me. There are worse subject matters written out there. Negative people are just so irritating.

message 46: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Guillet So i'm honestly not sure why this book was pulled. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! FINALLY, an author who choose a different story line!! Thank you!! Not the same old predictable story lines that a lot of recent books have been about. You read it....predict was it going to happen...and then you are finished...blah blah blah.
This book was very different. The storyline was original and sucked me in so I completely ignored my family for a day. To me, that means the book was AWESOME. Thank you M. Leighton!
