A True Champion

IMG_0984Today I interviewed the 250th person for Unlocking the Cage. I’ve met so many incredible men and women and always feel fortunate when they share who they are and why they fight. I talk with some amateurs, but mainly pros, an overwhelming majority with winning records (because they tend to be the ones that stick with the sport,) a good amount of champions, and a handful that are undefeated. I don’t put much emphasis on a fighter’s record or titles and usually only address the issues around it like extra pressure, what helped them achieve it, etc. I’m most interested in discovering what kind of person they are, what they stand for, what drives them.

A few days ago at Alliance MMA, I had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Chandler Jr., the undefeated Bellator Lightweight Champion. Michael impressed me, not with his 10-0 record, but with his attitude and mental toughness. His take on fighting and life is one of the best I’ve heard and I love how he’s creating a platform for a higher purpose. While talking with him, there were several times I couldn’t believe he is only 26 years old. With his dedication, work ethic, and motivation, there is nothing that’s going to stop him from achieving his goals. Regardless of what happens in his fighting career (which I bet will continue to be incredibly successful) I plan on following Michael and watching what a difference he makes, not only in the lives of those around him, but in the bigger picture as well.

I feel pretty fortunate to have met Michael and I can’t wait to see him defend his title this Thursday at Bellator in Irvine.
