Standing outside the door were two unbelievable, gorgeous horses. He smiled big and said, “Meet Tristan and Isolde.”
Charmeine’s mouth hung open in astonishment.
One horse was a huge black stallion with a long mane and coat was so black, it was almost blue. The other horse had a coat so white; it looked like snow and had a long mane.
With pride, Tabbruis said, “I have raised them since they were foals. They are my pride and joy. I hope you do not mind, the beach is private so there are no roads there. We could walk if you would prefer?”
Charmeine said smiling big, “Oh my God Tabbruis! They are magnificent! I can’t believe how stunning they are.” Charmeine started shaking her head and said, “Tabbruis, I have never ridden a horse. What if I hurt one? I would feel terrible.”
Tabbruis laughed, “Do not worry Isolde is very gentle, and she will guide you.”
Charmeine jumped up and down, “If you don’t think I would hurt her, I would love it. I take it Isolde is the white horse?” she said with an eyebrow raised.
Tabbruis nodded, “Yes my love. Let me help you up.”
Charmeine said, “Before you do that, can I talk to Isolde?”
Tabbruis was taken aback and said, “Do what you wish.”
Charmeine went to Isolde and put her hand out so the beautiful horse could smell her. Charmeine started petting Isolde on the forehead looking in her eyes. She said softly, “I will try my best to ride you well. Please don’t be scared. I won’t hurt you if I can help it girlfriend.”
She nodded to Tabbruis and with no effort; he placed her up on Isolde. Tabbruis was already on Tristan when he came over and showed Charmeine how to hold the reigns and steer.
Charmeine was so happy and it seemed Isolde was in tune with her from the start. She leaned down and whispered in Isolde’s ear, “I promise not to hurt you.” Isolde nodded her head up and down.
All four started out to the beach and Tabbruis said, “These animals are exquisite and have brought me a lot of pleasure.”
Tristan seemed a little anxious and Tabbruis said, “Tristan wants to run. Charmeine, do not worry, Isolde will take good care of you. I am just going to run him around a little, and we will come back.”
Tabbruis and Tristan shot off. Starting into a full gallop like in a flat race, Charmeine noticed the action with the stallion’s legs. The horse was truly amazing. Tabbruis headed for a fence and Charmeine winced, but the bascule was perfect and the amazing animal cleared it with no problem.
Charmeine felt Isolde start itching to run. She leaned down and said in Isolde’s ears, “Are we going to let the men show us up like that?” As if by magic, Isolde took off. Charmeine caught onto the transition. She held onto Isolde and matched the rhythm of her gallop.
Tabbruis turned and yelled at her to stop but they were already galloping. Amazingly Tabbruis noticed Charmeine was not only holding her own like a true rider, but she was actually helping the gallop.

Charmeine and Isolde ran to the same fence. Shocked Tabbruis opened his eyes wide and tried to holler for them to stop. However, Charmeine and Isolde jumped as if they were one mind easily clearing the fence. As Charmeine and Isolde ran past Tabbruis and Tristan, Charmeine waved bye-bye to Tabbruis yelling, “See ya later…sucker!” and winked at him.
Incredulously Tabbruis said as she was galloping away, “Oh no, she did not… She did! Come on Tristan, we cannot let the women show us up!”
Tabbruis and Tristan were chasing Charmeine and Isolde at a full gallop.
Tabbruis and Tristan caught up and Charmeine hollered, “What took you so long?”
Tabbruis yelled, “Charlatan, you had a head start!”
Charmeine beamed devilishly and shouted, “Boo, Hoo! Come on Isolde my girlfriend!” and stuck out her tongue to Tabbruis.
Tabbruis could not believe what he was seeing.
Charmeine and Isolde jumped fences, over small brooks and easily galloped having fun while Tabbruis and Tristan were flanking them. All four were enjoying the wind rushing through their hair.
After a while the horses began to slow and Charmeine shouted in a pout, “We’re here already? Darn it! I wanted to ride more!”
Tabbruis yelled suspiciously and breathing hard, “You… You are not even out of breath! You… have never ridden a horse before?”
Charmeine loudly said rolling her eyes, “Are you frigging mental? I was a ward of the State of New York, worked my way through college and have been working for the State of New York as a teacher supporting myself barely able to pay my bills! Where in the world do you believe I could get enough money to take lessons or even ride a horse?”
Tabbruis said, “But…you…”
Charmeine looked at him in the eyes and said, “I have never ridden a horse before Tabbruis.”
Tabbruis said, “Well it must be true because you are not capable of lying. Will wonders never cease about you? You are truly a fascinating female!”
Charmeine winked at him and proudly said, “It is all Isolde. I was just along for the ride.”
Tabbruis said, “Au contraire une épouse, you were matching and even helping Isolde’s gallop. Experienced riders have trouble doing that.
Charmeine said whimsically in perfect French, “Oh it must be Je ne se quoi, n’est-ce pas?”
Tabbruis started laughing, “I keep underestimating you, my love, but French too?
Charmeine said shaking her head, “Je sais seulement un peu de français.”
Tabbruis started laughing shaking his head, “You are really astonishing!”
As they arrived at a barn, he said, “We are here. Tristan and Isolde like this corral; they can run and get refreshment while we are here.”
Charmeine helped get the horses in order with Tabbruis.
He said, “I am going to make sure their feed and water are set. I will be around the barn.”
Charmeine looked at the two magnificent animals and they came together so she could rub their foreheads. Charmeine said to them in a soft voice, “Thank you Tristan and Isolde, you are part of our family now too. I will love both of you always and forever.” Neighing, they rubbed up against her and she laughed. As Charmeine walked around the barn, she saw Tabbruis and smiled wide running up to him. She said, “Tristan and Isolde are wonderful Tabbruis. Thank you for trusting me to ride Isolde.”
Tabbruis hugged her and said, “I heard you talking to Tristan and Isolde, thank you for loving them as much as I do Charmeine.”
Charmeine said to him quietly, “Haven’t you learned by now, we are one, our hearts are one, so if you love Tristan and Isolde, I do too?”
Tabbruis said while hugging her, “Yes, my wife… my wonderful wife, yes,” and he hugged her thanking God he had her in his arms.
