So I mentioned anteaters yesterday. That was my version of foreshadowing. Chekhov’s gun, if you will. (Google it.) You’d figure that if I find aardvark babies to be irresistibly ugdorable, then I’d feel similarly about by anteaters, their South American cousins-only-in-spirit. You’d be right.
I say “only in spirit” because they’re not actually related. They are more closely related to the sloth than the aardvark, which is only a bonus in my book.
They do have a schnoz that is similar to the aardvark’s and they serve the same purpose: scavenging for ants and termites.
They’re also aided in this by their very long tongues. Baby animal tongues usually get me, but I won’t pretend that I think these are cute. Still, they have other endearing features.
Like those squinty bug eyes. They always look sleepy, which amuses me. They’re also fairly hairless when they’re very young, which I also enjoy.
And like their cousin the sloth, and a number of others on the list, they are very clingy with their mothers. There’s something endearing about a squinty baby animal clinging to its mom for dear life, don’t you think?
