One day a messenger came to the castle of Dmitri and Tabbruis. The Elder Council requested an immediate meeting of all the Elders. Tabbruis could tell Dmitri’s hatred of the Elder Council was great. However, Dmitri was a shrewd man and knew better than anger the Elder Council. Dmitri and Tabbruis left immediately for Athens.
A few days later Dmitri and Tabbruis were standing in the Acropolis Temple in Athens, Greece. The Elder Council had used the area for meetings since before the Grecian people settled there.
The Elder Temple Guards brought in a beautiful young man whose light and life radiated throughout the stone building. The man’s hands were tied behind his back, his face was distorted from beatings and his neck had been ripped open by a Blood-Hunter’s fangs.
Tabbruis wanted to instantly help the poor wretch. Dmitri gripped Tabbruis’ arm firmly whispering to him, “You cannot help this man, to do so would mean your death too.”
Tabbruis said quietly, “Who or what is this man? He gives off a light like the sun.”
Dmitri nodded and whispered, “Yes Tabbruis, he is a Light-Bearer.”
Tabbruis felt empathy for the condemned Light-Bearer and became angry.
Dmitri whispered, “The Light-Bearers are opposite of our species. Their mission from God is to eradicate us as our mission from the Elder Council is to eradicate them.” Dmitri turned and whispered to Tabbruis as not to be heard and said, “The Elders believe the Earth is ours and not to be shared. Now, Tabbruis understand that I do not share that belief.”
Tabbruis whispered, “I do not either Dmitri. I believe the Earth can be shared as long as we let the humans live in peace. Dmitri, we should help the Light-Bearer escape.”

Dmitri whispered while holding Tabbruis’ arms back, “Tabbruis, we would condemn ourselves at the first step we take to the ‘Altar of Judgment.’ Besides, there is a prophecy of a Light-Bearer who will bring peace and harmony to the Blood-Hunters. The Light-Bearer along with a Blood-Hunter will battle Lucifer’s minions on Earth…
Even though my heart breaks for this Light-Bearer, we cannot stop the Elder Council and save him. However, if I would have known, we could have covertly helped the condemned man escape without revealing our identities.
Tabbruis, over the years I have helped many prisoners of the Elder Council escape. That being said, once the Elder Council knows of my covert treachery, I will surely die and therefore not be able to help others. Their reach goes far and wide around the Earth.”
Tabbruis felt disgust and hatred towards the Elder Council and began to understand Dmitri’s abhorrence to them.
Dmitri continued and said, “Also remember this Tabbruis, each species is repellant of each other.
The Light-Bearers believe the light cannot have dark and the Blood-Hunters believe the dark cannot have light.”
Tabbruis thought for a second repeating what he heard, ‘Light cannot have dark and the dark cannot have light.’
With that, the Light-Bearer was ripped to shreds in front of the gathering. The Blood-Hunters roared in amusement.
Tabbruis turning his back on hate…
Dmitri hung his head and looked away with a face as black as night.
Tabbruis felt revulsion and disgust for his race in every cell of his body. He turned his back on the hate.
Tabbruis had misjudged all his life the superiority and confidence he felt over humans. He whispered to Dmitri, “To be one who would slaughter a light like this is to be condemned to the dark always. I am empty.”
After the gathering, Tabbruis began to roam the Earth again. He did not return to Romania for a long time.

As I wrote this passage in the book…
I thought of all the prejudice that our world has.
I particularly am touched by this song and video by Nickelback, because I think of it as an anthem, a call into action.
My hope is that we can embrace the different, the unique and give each other the patience and respect we deserve.
