Rating: Adult
When Alex Morgan's car was hit by a drunk driver, causing his pregnant wife's death, he thought his world had ended. Doctors, able to save his unborn son, gave him his only reason to live. Alex has devoted the last four years to raising his son, Jack. What he never expected was his life turning into a nightmare.
Alex is an Assistant Professor in American History at Capital University in Georgetown. He has been given a small office that once belonged to Professor Casterson, now on leave. A call to his home one night about a break-in at his office brings Alex back to the University to clean up and check what is missing. He finds what appears to be a cell phone, but it actually turns out to be some sort of time device.
Knocked out, Alex wakes up to find himself in what he assumes is the future. Nothing is familiar, and he is once again in his office at the University, only this time troopers are shooting at everyone in sight, including him.
Doing the only thing he can think of, he manages to get hold of a trooper's uniform and is about to steal a van. The van is a transport for prisoners, and he finds himself rescuing a young boy. The young boy in question turns out to be a young woman. She is Jessie O'Neil, part of the Freedom Brigade, a resistance group trying to bring back the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.
Alex faces one surprise after another: America is under Martial Law, the President is in office for life, public displays of affection are forbidden, and his parents were never married, and therefore, he never existed. Is his wife Casey alive? Is his son Jack alive?
Amazingly, Alex discovers that he is in the right time but the wrong world. People live in fear. Soldiers can shoot and kill as they want. People accused of crimes are hung in public. Famous museums and monuments no longer exist.
As Jessie and Alex try to hide from the troopers looking for her, they begin having feelings other than fear; they are falling in love. Alex knows that the device he has is the answer to changing the world as it is today, if he can figure out how to work it. How far back does he have to go? Can he undo the damage that caused the United States to be what it is? If he changes things does that mean that Jessie would no longer be in his life? Will he get his son back?
This is a fascinating book with amazing characters. Jessie is only twenty-two and yet is willing to put her life on the line for a better world. Alex is willing to do whatever it takes to get his son back and bring the United States back to its former glory. It is a story of courage, people risking it all to fight for peace.
I was hooked from the first page and couldn't put the book down until the end.
