The Higgs Boson: Why Should I Care?

[image error] The Higgs Boson, a theoretical particle that is key to the scientific understanding of all matter, has been discovered (but still needs to be confirmed).

Okay. So What. Big deal. What's the significance and what does this all mean to me?

Glad you asked!

Physicists believe the Higgs mechanism enables us to understand how particles acquire mass ... It could be that the Higgs particle acts as a bridge between ordinary matter, which makes up atoms, and dark matter, which we know is a very importa...

Cecilia This is all so mind boggling...yet very cool, too. I'm not even going to pretend I understand it all...:>

What scares me is that eventually someone will figure out how to use this discovery for an "evil" purpose or for weaponry of some sort.

The Higgs Boson is such a weird concept for me to wrap my mind around other than I hope whatever scientists eventually end up with will be used to benefit everyone.

Ish...I just had this memory flash about that Twilight Zone (I think it was?) episode after aliens land on Earth and bring a book with them titled "To Serve Man"...yikes! Don't know what that really has to do with your article except maybe aliens being able to "beam" to Earth and enjoy supper with Hannibal Lecter. Okay...so I don't make sense...8/

Thanks, Steven, for an interesting article. I just finished reading one about Higgs Boson on NPR's site right before I saw this...very weird...:>

Cheers!

Stephen Tremp I just saw that Twilight Zone episode over the weekend on the ScyFi Channel. ANd it comes down to who has these breakthrough discoveries of they will benefit mankind or be used for someone's own greedy purposes.

Thanks for the comment!
