Robert Alan Wright's Knightmare: Rising from the Ashes plunges readers into a grim fantasy world where ancient evils stir and the line between living and dead blurs. The narrative quickly establishes a desperate tone as protagonist Stellan leaves Summervale, setting him on a path that leads to Skyfire Fort. There, he joins a diverse group of allies tasked with confronting escalating threats that defy easy categorization.
The story unfolds through a series of increasingly perilous missions, from investigating a silver mine beset by orc activity and reanimated creatures to the chilling exploration of Ice Ridge Keep. Wright masterfully builds a sense of dread, introducing distinct forms of undead like Blightwolves, Wights, and later the engineered Necroforged Dreadwings, each posing a unique and profoundly unsettling challenge. The scope of destruction becomes evident with the extensive desecration of Stillmere’s graveyard and the complete annihilation of a small town, both locations suffering as part of a larger plan to mobilize the dead, orchestrated by a cunning necromancer.
As the team grapples with these horrors, themes of resilience and the cost of survival are explored, particularly through Stellan’s journey and the burdens shared by his companions. The revelation of the Aetherlock — a relic capable of suppressing divine magic — raises the stakes, underscoring the formidable power at play. This first installment sets a compelling foundation for a new fantasy saga, balancing gritty action with a palpable sense of a world on the precipice.
