Too Hot and Developing Hooks by Morton S. Gray

It’s been far too hot for me over the last few weeks. I find that my brain doesn’t function properly over about 22 degrees and if you add lack of sleep as well, I am not getting much done at all, which is very frustrating.

I’ve been having some lovely guest authors featuring their books on my blog lately and there are plenty more to come over the next few months. Let me know if you are an author who would like a slot.

My quest to write up our family history is progressing well and I am finding it very satisfying to incorporate acres of notes taken over many years into family specific documents, that might stand a chance of being kept on family members shelves.

I was pleased to find my dormant writing brain was showing some signs of coming back to life this week when I began working on some hooks for my works in progress alongside some other writers doing the same.

Hooks are supposed to be the tantalising statements that make publishers and ultimately readers want to publish and / or read your book.

These short statements of what your book is about look deceptively simple but it is so hard to encapsulate the essence of your book in a short statement that works as a hook. The idea is that if you are in a lift with a publisher and they ask about your writing work in progress you can sell the book with this statement – literally hooking the publisher into your idea.

After several lacklustre attempts, I discovered that a spider diagram highlighting the main points of a novel was helpful in deciding exactly what to include. There is a long way to go to get these slick enough for a publisher to take notice, but it has been fun having a go. I may share a few of these with you at a later date when I am more confident of my efforts. And as I have a new six book series looking for a publishing home, I need to keep refining them.
