
There are advantages in both methods. You do your value study and color study and then you jump into your finished painting. Or you dive into that white blank piece of watercolor paper like you’re a second grader and have just opened a new box of crayons. So the sketch above was done right on the watercolor paper. I did play around with my sketchbook before hand but there is a great freedom and freshness that comes from diving right into the sketch. And there is a great satisfaction that comes from seeing how it turns out. You do have to be prepared with some sketching ability that comes from carrying your sketchbook around with you and putting pencil or pen to paper.
