I Made a Pie

Hi There!

I have blogged before about losing my dog Venus and how badly if affected me. Sometimes when I am very low, beautiful moments happen. Yesterday for example, a nurse from the rehabilitation center where Venus and I often volunteered saw me outside my building and asked where we’d been. In the last several months of her life, Venus was physically not up to walking far, let alone cavorting around the hospital beds of people who yearn for a little canine therapy.

The nurse was genuinely devastated when I told her I’d lost Venus. She said some of her patients were still there at the rehab/longterm care facility and often asked about her. On a whim, I borrowed my neighbor’s dog and went over to the small, private hospital. To see the joy on people’s faces at the small, wriggly bundle of puppy love made me certain I will get another dog soon. They are the best therapy ever!

One old lady I remembered from my last visit ten months ago asked about my dog. “What have you been doing?” she asked me.

My automatic response is usually. “Oh, working.” But here she was, stuck in a wheelchair, lonely and sad…and I said, “I made a pie.”

Her eyes lit up. Somebody was making conversation with her!

“What kind of pie?”

“A Blue Hawaiian pie. Somebody sent me the recipe and I had to buy all this booze for it.”

“Really? What kind?”

“Blue curacao and pineapple coconut rum. I guess I’m stuck with them now because I’m not a big drinker and to be honest, I didn’t really care for the pie.”

That old lady laughed and laughed. “Don’t ever regret trying new things,” she told me. “Always regret the time you didn’t take to try something new. As you get older those are the moments you regret.”

She is so right. I did it. I made a pie. Not my usual thing and the memory still makes me smile…even if the ingredients were more than my weekly food budget! I might just make a pie and take it over there. With my neighbor’s dog. It felt good to be there, to make people laugh.

But what about you? Have you ever spent money on something you regretted? I’m really curious. I really want to know.

Aloha oe,

A.J.
