Future Military Capability and the Impact on the Sci-Fi Genre

I was watching the news this morning (in the UK) and the Defence Minister, who was defending funding lines on our UK Armed Forces vocalised a comparison of our Armed Forces now, compared to the ‘Cold War’ era. The level of reduction is staggering!

As always, and with everything, this got my Sci-Fi/military veteran brain rolling 😉

The narratives I often like to write and read normally contain gigantic fleets and armies of ground troops. They are then normally always pitched against some enemy of equal size and capability in a battle to decide the fate of the universe.

With the drastic reductions in the size of units across all streams of our Armed Forces, are these concepts of huge space battles soon to become an unrealistic format for future Sci-Fi, with more focus being on alliances, cooperation and tactical striking in all forums of warfare?

I feel, personally, that you just can’t beat a good old fashioned bust up on mass, but I’m open to other ideas. What do you guys think?
