Much of Troy Denning's series felt kind of..."meh"...but one of the better elements was the one protagonist realizing his pie-in-the-sky dreams of egalitarianism in a world remade to match (effectively) the modern West on Earth were simply a product of his privileged upbringing. He didn't NEED to confront the cruel, brutal realities of the world of Athas to the extent that the majority of its population did, so he could afford his luxury beliefs. We often forget how much of our ideologies are grounded in the circumstances of our births, and that's one of the fun elements of Dark Sun -- forcing us to reconsider our perspectives on life.
