Hot coffee and pie at the Times Square Automat

What I love most about this Automat postcard from 1935 is the close-up view of the coffee dispenser and four glass slots revealing slices of various pies. It sums up everything perfect about these Midcentury New York City eateries gone from Gotham since 1991.

This Automat was located on Broadway between 46th and 47th Streets. It must have been enormous!

I can imagine the customers who came in—office workers, tourists, Broadway hopefuls, and lonely souls looking for nourishment with only a few coins to spare. The Automat was open to all.
