I have covered Mihály Zichy's
The Triumph of the Genius of Destruction previously on this blog,
here and
here. I must confess that my appreciation for the painting has increased significantly since I wrote those two blog posts.
My deepened respect for this particular work of art stems partly from the awareness that Zichy's destructive scene could easily be our time and place. More than that, my admiration is grounded in how Zichy depicts "the answer" to the triumph of the genius of destruction. The depiction is so brilliantly faint and subtle as to be barely visible in the fiery kaleidoscopic ruination the canvas displays.
Yet there it is.
