Tinnitus (2022)

Marina is an ex-diver who is suffering from a terrible buzzing in her ears. After an accident suffered in the last Olympics, she decides to go back to competing in hopes of winning an Olympic medal, by putting her life to risk.

My thoughts: Beautiful cinematography and outstanding sound design can’t really save this fairly dull foray into body horror.

Inside (2023)

Nemo, a high-end art thief, is trapped in a New York penthouse after his heist doesn’t go as planned. Locked inside with nothing but priceless works of art, he must use all his cunning and ingenuity to survive.

My thoughts: Willem Dafoe is great in this not-so-great film whose deceptively simple premise belies a laborious and somewhat turgid exploration of themes related to art, materialism, and existence.

Bunker (2022)

Trapped in a bunker during World War I, a group of soldiers are faced with an ungodly presence that slowly turns them against each other.

My thoughts: The combination of stilted performances, clunky dialogue, and overwrought score makes this movie feel like one long, laborious unfunny parody.

It Comes At Night (2017)

Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, a man has established a tenuous domestic order with his wife and son. Then a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge.

My thoughts: The horror in this grim little post-apocalyptic thriller comes not from zombies or mushroom monsters but from within, delivering a tense and suspenseful story about paranoia, mistrust, and the lengths people will go to in order to protect those they love.

Climax (2018)

French dancers gather in a remote, empty school building to rehearse on a wintry night. The all-night celebration morphs into a hallucinatory nightmare when they learn their sangria is laced with LSD.

My thoughts: The dance and direction are creatively and technically accomplished, but the movie is ultimately a series of oners in a visually hellish one-beat story.
