How do you....

So recently I picked up a few free books on Amazon.com for my kindle. I started on one tonight, and it's horrible. I mean, downright bad. I would rate it one star.

As an author, I hesitate to do this because I feel like if I do the author of the book may choose to retaliate in some way, however, as a reader I am absolutely appalled at some of the reviews. After reading part of the book, I know that the 5 and 4 stars that were given to the book are fake. Especially the one that says the editing was superb.

I'm not an editor, but as a college educated woman with several years experience writing, and many more reading, I can tell what's been edited, and what hasn't been.

I feel bad for the author, but honestly I feel WAY worse for the people who are actually paying for this manuscript. It could be fantastic with some significant editing, but I don't think the author had it professionally edited or knows that she really needs to read her work OUT LOUD to herself before publishing it.

What to do?

Leslie Ferdinand I think it is all about karma. If someone is mean-spirited enough to retaliate because you've expressed your honest opinion, the same thing will eventually happen to them. We live in a free society and we should be able to honestly express our thoughts with fear of reprisal. Unfortunately, most people don't feel that way. 'Do unto others as youI would hacethe others do untoI you' seems to be taken as you did it to me, so I'll do it to you.

Having said that, I'm wracking my brain, trying to figure if I remember you saying you got Wicked Allure free. :-)

Leslie Ferdinand I'm typing on my Droid and when I think I've pressed one letter, it ends up being another. Sorry for the typos.

Amy i know that there were some typos and grammaticals in my book after editing too. i had a colleague edit it, but some still made it in. i was mortified. i used independent publishing, and was able to pull what had been published and re-release. and when i say mortified, i MEAN mortified. as in sat in the shower and cried mortified. and this was over minor mistakes. when i read books that are like this, i am embarrassed for the author. but then i read books where there are spelling mistakes, and incorrect word choice and have little compassion. there is one thing to make include a double "the" somewhere, or one or two poorly constructed sentences, and another thing entirely to use big words incorrectly. just because you can spell a $10 word doesn't mean you know the meaning of it.

Amy and now that i have said that, i am sure it is going to come back and bite me in the ass too.

Missy LaRae LOL @Amy. I re-read mine and found a couple of small mistakes too, and re-edited it again and re-released it. I think the first manuscript of a self published author is always the one they make the most mistakes on because they're getting into something that they've never done before.

I feel for you as far as the mortified. I read some of these books and wonder whether the author even re-read their work or anything like that. I personally re-read mine at least four times, since I was no longer "creating" I could totally look at it with a critical eye. You've no idea how many "that"'s I deleted.

Amy i know there are probably still some errors in mine, and at some point you just have to accept it. i am such a perfectionist, that i could probably go back in and change things every day for the next 5 years and still not be satisfied. at some point, enough is enough. and i think i am ok with that. this week.

Missy LaRae I know how you feel. I could constantly go back and edit, and re-edit every single thing about my book, and I have to tell myself to stop, it's done. Now all I have to do is focus on the other ones in the series and get finished with those.
