Not sure if you’re the “head to a pub on St. Paddy’s Day” kinda person, but IF YOU ARE I have a way to avoid the crowds…
Consider, this St. Patrick’s Day, celebrating the San Patricios (or the St. Patrick’s Battalion). In the late 1840s, this battalion of mostly Irish immigrants to America were conscripted to fight in the American army in the Mexican-American War in order to “earn” citizenship.

On the battlefield, however, the largely Catholic battalion realized they were fighting Mexican Catholics, their religious brothers. So, they defected and began fighting alongside their former adversaries against America in what they realized was an unjust war.

They became legends and to this day the San Patricios are heroes in Mexico.
So, if you want to go get a drink or two today, go to a Mexican restaurant. They’re never crowded on St. Patrick’s Day. ¡And toast the brave San Patricios!
