Are there any herbal solutions for Type 2 diabetes?
Multiple herbs have been found to help manage the blood sugar levels of people who have Type 2 diabetes. However, most of this research is still at preliminary human clinical trial or late animal trial stage. We should get a definitive verdict on their effectiveness on the completion of phase 3 human clinical trials.
I have found the maximum scientific evidence in favor of herbs Gymnema sylvestre, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Eugenia jambolana, and Curcuma longa. These herbs are included in many Ayurvedic diabetes formulations.
Scientific studies have also validated the following herbs’ anti-diabetic properties that are mentioned in Traditional Chinese medicine. These are – Atractylodes macrocephala, Codonopsis pilosula, Dioscorea opposita, Flos lonicerae, and Pueraria lobata.
During my research, I did not come across definitive support to the view to Ayurveda alone can cure Type 2 diabetes. It is probably acceptable to use herbal formulations under medical supervision but only as supporting medicine.
Diabetes is a complex disease, and it is best to be under the treatment of a diabetologist than self-medicate.
