Why do people get pets they can't afford?

In these tough economic times I understand suddenly not be able to afford your pets but for Heaven's sake, do the right thing by them. Take them to a rescue or a shelter but don't starve them. My niece is taking riding lessons at a place that rescues abandoned and neglected horses. Thank God for these people as they have saved about ten of these magnificent animals.
