How Tapping Helped a 13-Year-Old Manage Pre-Surgery Fear and Post-Surgery Pain

Surgery can be nerve-wracking for adults. Children and teens might find it even more frightening. Luckily, Tapping can help.

And during the Coronavirus pandemic, the idea of surgery can make people feel more stressed.

Thirteen-year-old Daniel* needed to have abdominal surgery. Unfortunately, he had an underlying history of anxiety that worsened in the hospital as he was heading in on the day of his surgery.

Daniel was very fearful and he worried about the anesthesia needed for the surgery. He had a strong fear of contracting COVID-19 on top of all of it because he would be spending several nights overnight in the hospital, where he heard there were people who had Coronavirus.

Tapping for Post-Surgery Pain and Relief

After the surgery, to help manage Daniel’s extreme anxiety and his high level of postoperative pain and discomfort, the hospital consulted with Dr. Melanie A. Gold, professor of pediatrics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and medical director of New York Presbyterian Hospital’s seven school-based health centers, to meet with Daniel and offer him integrative approaches to manage his symptoms and anxiety.

Dr. Gold told Daniel about a wide variety of treatments he could explore. Options included meditation, The Tapping Solution app, aromatherapy, yoga, acupuncture, acupressure, and self-regulation with self-hypnosis. Daniel was most interested in Tapping.

She sent Daniel the link to get The Tapping Solution app and suggested he download it on his phone and explore the meditations for “Releasing Pain” and “Releasing Anxiety.”

Daniel found Tapping incredibly helpful after doing the very first meditation. He told Dr. Gold his discomfort and pain went from an eight before Tapping down to a two after Tapping.

Dr. Gold reminded Daniel that Tapping was there for him whenever he needed it.

Explore The Tapping Solution App for yourself (it’s free!), and recommend it to the parents, teachers, children, and teens in your life who may be stressed about back to school during the Coronavirus Pandemic.
