So a friend of mine has a brilliant show over at the MET about the Sahel. A place with a long history, it is now in dire straits.

piece is about Griots and their storytelling ways. As with all stories (even those that make it to text, though they tend to be a little less imaginative) there a millions of versions out there (as there should be). This one is the Sunjata Epic.
