Were they worth the trees,
the life still growing,
were they ever deserving
of the fall, of the delimbing,
the stolen home from winged
and crawling?
I say no, ashamedly,
though I turn those pages.
One day words will come to me,
honest enough,
and filled with beauty
worthy of leaf and needle,
of sawdust and the din
before the pulp.
Until then, I walk into
forest and glade,
and weep before them.
Hand to bark I beg
forgiveness,
I choke out
apology.
