The WONDERS of Art.

How many times have we bemoaned the fact that we can not do this or that when in actual fact it is the task itself that casts a foreboding block in our minds. On occasion the objective might not even have ever been attempted but the decision already made that it would be impossible or simply something that we can not do.

We may be content to pass the opportunity by, when all it takes is a slight push to lift the curtain and reveal the potential that is within all of us. Take drawing, it is a talent that most people will envy. In this actual example, in front of an invited audience, a spectacular phenomenon was about to take place. On being asked how many people in the audience could draw a tiny amount of hands were tentatively raised but by the end of the show everyone had a beam on their faces as they, in a few moments, had created their own Mona Lisa so to speak.

If you have an open mind and are wiling to have a go, often that is all that is necessary to start a love affair with art. From the stage, on the easel, a v shape for a nose on its side is the first mark of the character that the audience armed with pencil and paper drew. Then above it, two parallel six shapes for eyes. Level with the eyes was a curve for the ear and under the eyes an upward curve for a smiling mouth. Over the top of the eyes and around the ear a curve of short spiky lines for hair and a loose s shape for chin and neck, a parallel vertical line drawn down for the back of the neck with a half circle around the base of the neck for the top of the jersey and two horizontal lines either side for the shoulders. From then on there are countless variations to the features that denote the mood and personality of the character created and that is your own personal successful venture to being an artist.

A group of patients who had suffered a stroke that interfered with their communication ability were with their carers and involved in another audience prepared to participate in attempting to draw. After the event pictures of the delighted participants were a tonic for all to see. Their faces and carers were bathed in smiles of delight at their accomplishment. The most interesting feature perhaps was that most of the patients actually used the opposite hand to which they were dependent before their strokes, but they had used this new side of their bodies to astoundingly draw their truly sublime cartoons.

What limits are achievements, is the belief we hold of our own capability, but that often is not
the true reflection of reality. Take a complex project and in an orderly fashion work on each part
piece by piece. Mistakes are the building blocks of success. We are disheartened when at the first
attempt we do not achieve perfection but perseverance is needed to achieve anything worthwhile.
