Chapter 19 Were Creatures

An excerpt from The Violet Series Book 1: The Water Nymph’s Tale.

Bonnie and Clyde were lying in each others’ arms. Both had their eyes closed as the sun was rising. Soon the light touched them and they opened their eyes. They looked at each other and smiled.

“I guess it’s nearly time to have breakfast and check the transportation schedule.” She sat up.

“No, don’t get up.” He held on to her. “Can’t we stay in bed a while longer?”

“Clyde, where are we heading? We’re business partners and now we have something more.”

“Why don’t we just get married?”

“What? Are you serious?”

“Yes. Well, why not? What objections do you have?”

She sighed. “None. I’d be happy to marry you.”

“Wonderful.” He pulled her close and they kissed.

****************

Violet and Antoni were sitting on the preserved land. The water nymphs and Herbert were in the water. After the vampire incident, things were quiet.

“Violet, when do you think Eris will be like Mars, with people living on the surface without biodomes?”

“I don’t know. My grandfather says Mars was easier to terraform because it was already somewhat like Earth to begin with. Eris isn’t similar enough. It may always have domes on its surface.”

“Your grandfather is a water dragon.”

“Yes, he is.”

“Then how did he have human children?”

Violet smiled. “He had children when he was human. Later, he was attacked by a vampire. Then he was given blood from a water nymph and a werecat. The donated blood prevented him from becoming a vampire.”

“Oh.”

“I know it’s hard to understand. I think there are days, he still has trouble with it. He is a biologist, though. He puts his faith in the results of the standardized tests and measurable data.”

“Was he one of the original colonists who later disappeared?”

“Yes.”

The sun was setting and they didn’t move. They had no reason to get indoors. It wasn’t even chilly for either one.

Antoni felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He jerked and looked around. “We’re being watched.”

Violet looked around. “By whom? I don’t see anyone.”

A howl and scream were heard.

“What?” She jumped.

“I think they’re were creatures.”

“Antoni, how can you be sure of that?”

“You told me Mars doesn’t have large non-human animals and I can just feel it. I’m sorry I can’t explain the second part.”

“Then why am I not sensing them? I’m half water nymph.”

“I don’t know. Can you get a hold of your grandfather?”

“Yes, unless he’s sleeping.”

“Good, we might need his help. I doubt these were creatures would like to see a water dragon.”

The were creatures came closer, slowly growling as they carefully watched Violet and Antoni.
