With few exceptions humans are wired to fight for life. Try to hold someone’s head under the water and you will witness a mighty fight for breath. The need to breathe is located in the deepest recesses of our central nervous system in the brainstem. It is an unconscious drive; we don’t have access to it save the ability to slow or speed up the rate.
