ava-burton-writing:
hey writeblr! Talk to me, I’m curious: what’s one trope you love but never put in your own writing, and what’s one trope you hate that everyone seems to love?
I’ll go first: I’m a sucker for Terry Pratchett naming conventions (Drum Billet, Ella Saturday) and I hate the “kindly old man spouts cryptic manipulative shit” trope (Yoda, Dumbledore)
Oo! Oo! I love anti-hero type main characters that are kind of awful people but are so cool/expert/entertaining you forgive a lot of their sins a bit. Especially if they’re British, apparently. (Peaky Blinders with Cillian Murphy, Taboo with Tom Harty)
This isn’t quite a trope I dislike, but I dislike it when it’s done a certain way. I hate it when the romantic intrest plot has unbelievable and unnessisary conflict for the sake of keeping the tension. Like character A and B have been THIS CLOSE to kissing for like a thousand chapters, but they arnt right now because they’re angry at each other for something absolutely petty and stupid. Conflict is only entertaining if it makes sense and is reasonable, otherwise it just feels like plot convenience.
