An excerpt from "They Fought Like Men"
....Hattie leaned back against the tree, glaring at this impudent woman… this Lucinda. The soldier’s one-week presence in her life had hampered the already difficult adjustment from orphaned daughter and possible widow to infantryman. Her gut told her things could get even worse if she cooperated… or perhaps better? There was no way to know for certain.
“Ah, I do believe I’ve hit a nerve in that regard. So, is it the name of your pa? Maybe it’s a brother, or a cousin or uncle? After all, it sounded kind of true when you said your cousin was Billy’s pal, Ezekiel. Maybe you’re his kid sister, instead, with a name like Harriet, Hazel, Helen, or—”
“Hattie!” she blurted out in a hissed whisper, stopping herself from saying anything else to avoid an emotional deluge of tears threatening to follow. She bit her tongue and waited for the painful surge to retreat before going on. “Hattie Grey…. Are you satisfied?”
The soldier she now knew as Lucinda, and not Louis, Templeton laughed and shook her head.
“Satisfied? Ah, hell no!” She smiled roguishly. “But it’s a start…. For the time bein’, you don’t make life uncomfortable for me, and I’ll do the same for you, Hattie Grey.”
