Dr. Sleep In The Works (Updated)

It's now official--Stephen is working on Dr. Sleep, the sequel to The Shining. This weekend Steve read an excerpt from this at his appearance at George Mason University. They have given us permission to post their taping of the event here on Steve's site which we will do as soon as we receive the file. Dr. Sleep's plot includes a traveling group of vampires called The Tribe which is part of the passage he read from.

You can now view the video of Stephen receiving the Mason Award and reading a portion of Dr. Sleep.

Kathy Jackson How can a traveling band of vampires have anything to do with The Shining??? Please don't associate the classic with something so over done like vampires. The Shining is one of my all time favorite books! Let it be a sequel to Rose Red - a story that actually HAD vampires in it to begin with.

Sean Because all the worlds are connected. Haven't you read The Dark Tower Series?

Then don't read it. I don't complain about Two and a Half Men being on television because I watch other shows. Read a different book and let those who want to read it, do so.

Kathy Jackson Since all the worlds are connected, as Sean says, then let him pick one of those other worlds for the story to be a sequel to...don't taint the Shining with vampires. We are all entitled to our opinion - no one opinion is wrong or right as opinions aren't facts but feelings. Voicing a negative about something does not mean we devalue the author's other work or suddenly don't like him - we simply have a strong feeling about the subject. All opinions should be welcomed...

David A lot Stephen King Novel sounds very odd, or sometimes shite, then you read them and they are immense...so withhold your judgement.

Sean You are right. I am wasting time talking to you.

Kevin I wonder how many of you who are arguing have actually looked at the video.

The Tribe is a group of vampires, but not in the traditional sense. From what I've gathered they feast on the sort of energy which Danny possesses.

Now, that said. I think it's sad to think that people got nothing better to do but argue over something which hasn't been published yet. Seriously, like the old saying goes, "Never judge a book by its cover", and considering there is no book oit yet, it's way to early to start judging. Having an opinion based on a few blog posts and rumors is like predicting the weather while sitting in a basement.

Have your opinions - state your opinions, but back them up with something solid.

Cheers!

Jason Lilly Bag of Bones was his last GREAT work. Everything after that has just been okay.

Chris Since his accident, I've noticed a change in his writing. Most of his books since then are more what I call sci-fi than horror. I still buy his books when they come out, but I no longer shelve what I'm reading to read his. Gone are the days when he published books like The Talisman, The Dark Half, Gerald's Game and Misery. Now I just wait for the aliens to come and take over. Oh well. He still gets my money, so I guess some people can rest on their laurels.

Nikki Unless it's a Typo and they meant, "Salem's Lot"

The way I see it, it's King's creation so he can do what he wants with it. It's not for us to decide. Besides I don't think horror vampires are overdown these days, rather a watered down version of vampirism.
Anyway, The Shinings means a lot to me too, but I have complete faith in mr. King. I owe him that.

Maggie "You're sounding an awful lot like a butt-hurt puppy"
uhhhh wtf is a butt-hurt puppy?! LOL

message 13: by Judy (new)

Judy I am very excited about the Shining sequel. I've been a King fan since the very beginning, and I still buy all his books, shelve and read them many times over. There has always been an element of SF in his work, Tommyknockers and It, just to name two.

message 14: by Samantha Wichers (new)

Samantha Wichers I think everyone should just be grateful that such an amazing writer and storyteller is still producing so much work. Dont judge his re-use of vampires until you read the book, because I'll be the first to bet that it's all going to make an amazing amount of sense as to why he chose to make it a sequel to The Shining and not Lot. As a Constant Reader you need to learn to trust the master at work.

Zachary Both the shining and Lot were pre quels to this book, opinions are over rated, and O.J. did it!

Kathy Just like with all his books, I'm really looking forward to this book! Can't wait!
