"Real Artists" is a new science fiction short from screenwriter/director Cameo Wood, who has studied artificial intelligence and neuroscience. It posits a very possible, near future where AI is used to create movies.
I mean, that future is very, very near. Artificial intelligence is already writing some news stories, the kind that are stats-heavy: earnings reports and sports recaps, according to
Wired.
Although Netflix is the most open about using audience data to decide what original programming to greenlight, it's likely that other studios and production companies are testing this.
The film takes this a bit farther: With AI, will we need human creativity? And what would that look like?
While "Real Artist" seems to come down on the side of human creativity, it raises the question of what people's role can and should be in a world where machines can determine the likely success of a movie. And the twist at the end reveals what Wood thinks about our prospects.
It's a thought-provoking and well-produced film that anyone in a creative field should watch.
