Comparison for all the bullet wounds:

1) Hope got shot in the back, both in the unaired pilot and a study in pink. I didn’t get quite the moment of the bullet hitting him but if you can remember in the pilot, the shot was brutal and the exit wound was so large that Sherlock got blood on his face while he was sitting across the cabbie. In ASIP, you can distinctly see the spurt of blood coming when he gets shot by John, too. Please note that both times the cabbie wasn’t moving and throwing himself in front of Sherlock.

2) Sherlock gets shot by Mary, facing her. The bullet enters the body in one clean hit and after that starts bleeding. He didn’t move either and the blood starts spilling because he’s standing up. He falls on his back quite literally three seconds after the shot. You can notice how small the hole is. And also please note that Sherlock in his mind (through MP Mycroft) knows that knowing the caliber of the gun or the size of the bullet don’t matter at this point: the bullet hit vital organs and he’s going to die.

3) Mary gets shot. Now, she’s supposed to get shot by Vivian and she did move by throwing herself in front of Sherlock. However, the wound literally ‘exploded’ (it also makes a very distinct sound when it happens). Contrary to Sherlock’s wound but similarly to Hope’s wounds, the blood comes forward in a spurt that doesn’t go with the way her body moves. Also, if we want to deduce what kind of gun Vivian was using, that doesn’t matter at this point: she had a very discreet, small gun but that doesn’t match with how violent the bullet wound looks. Just like Hope, the wound looks way bigger that it’s supposed to be.

Conclusion: Mary definitely got shot from behind and it wasn’t by Vivian since she was facing her.

Plus, we know Sherlock didn’t stay where he was. He did try to move away before the bullet hit so there’s a chance he wasn’t targeted by the bullet that hit Mary.

And who do we know who’s a crack shot, with nerves of steel, whose hands don’t shake when he has to fire a gun?
