A Viking they did go...

A member of the f-list has been staying with us for the last few days and we have had a delightful time - I picked her up in Oxford's beautiful Christ Church on Saturday and we drove down through Avebury, where we had lunch. P is writing a book on the Vikings, which partly takes place in this area, and so we have been to Barrow Mump, to Wedmore and Edington, and to Wells. I have learned a great deal about my own county - I am familiar with the Arthurian cycle, and with later aspects of the county's history, but know next to nothing about the Saxon/Viking period. We also went to Lyme Regis, where a seagull snatched a sandwich out of my hand in an immediate surgical strike, and home via the Cerne Abbas giant. I am now back at work, but feeling somewhat more inspired and those of you who are subscribers should be getting the first Chen instalment by the end of the week - it's written, but I need to have an editing pass and then we're there.
