Shamus offers a gift. Is it a red tulip? Friday Snippets has quirky romance - Red Tulip #FridaySnippets
From my quirky little flash fiction romance - Red Tulip
Scene set: Darcy is on a dinner date with Shamus at his mansion.
Shamus stood next to an open door. "My grandmother's library."The aroma of wood polish and old books nudged my nose before I stepped into the room. I have seen this room only in my imagination. Bookshelves reached floor to ceiling, every available inch of shelf space was covered by a book. Stacks of volumes were mounded on tops of small tables. A desk on the far side had three piles and one more on the chair accompanying it.I turned and hiccuped. Before was a fireplace were two worn chairs with small footstools. A table rested next to each one, just big enough to hold a cup of tea while one sat in the chair and lost themselves inside a novel. But it was, again, the painting that grabbed my attention. It was me. Only not me. Someone who looked like me a long time ago."Please. Sit." He indicated one of the chairs. "I can explain."My gaze riveted to the picture, I sat across from him as Reginald settled at my feet."That is my great grandmother, Darcy McTavis. Originally Darcy O'Flanahan.""Darcy?" I gulped. The woman sat on a brown sofa doing embroidery work. The saying she was finishing read - I will love you until the twelfth of never. She wasn't looking at her work. Instead, she seemed to be staring at me and there was a mischievous twinkle in her eye."A long time ago, Darcy and Shamus lived in a little village on the northern coast of Ireland. They fell in love. An old family feud barred them from marrying. Darcy agreed to follow Shamus to America. It was a great sacrifice for her to leave, but she loved him. It's been said, that the day they wed, all the bells in their village in Ireland rang."He leaned forward. "When Shamus began to court Darcy, he offered her a red scarf to keep her neck warm on blustery days."Standing, he smiled and stepped closer to my chair. "To start our courtship, I offer something to bring a moment of childish delight into your day."Shamus reached behind my chair. "Will you trust me enough to close your eyes and hold out your hand?"Without a moment of hesitation, I did as he requested. I felt his hand press my fingers close. "Open your eyes."His twinkling gaze and smile filled me with joy as I stared up at a red balloon.
